About the project

As a challenge to myself, I decided to branch out and delve into learning Embergen, having spent my summer working in Houdini, I also chose to learn a new feature of this very capable software - Copernicus. Together the two softwares blend their products inside of Unreal Engine for a flash showcase of VFX.

Project Details

By creating an RBD simulation, I was able to isolate damage to create the ground decal that you see in the video and images here. Then, applying that in Unreal and adding my flipbook that I created inside of Embergen to a Niagara system with a light emitter also to give that glow effect adds in the fire that elevates this effect's impact.

I decided to create the decal using Houdini for the sole purpose of replicability, having a tool on hand that I could tweak to generate me a totally different impact decal with the change of a few parameters and artistically driven decisions was beyond powerful and really highlighted to me how crucial proceduralism would become to me as an artist.
