About the project

Creating fleshy, organic and droopy shapes is often a struggle for even experienced artists, so to combat this time and frustration intensive process, I developed a tool that handles the struggle for you! My main inspiration came from the usage of fleshy tendrils inside of the Dead by Daylight maps to add a layer of eerie grossness.

Project Details

Perfect for creating a creepy, dark and fantasy style environment, this tool creates links between objects of your selection, creating an enwebbed appearance around them.

With lots of parameters to adjust thickness, curvature, as well as vertex colours for compatibility with subsurface scattering use cases, this tool allows artists to iterate on their environments efficiently and smoothly. Overall the tool challenged me in terms of performance, meshing together simulations like vellum and VDB processes to create a clean appearance, the performance was rather heavy in the beginning, but I managed to bring it down quite a bit, but of course there's always more work to be done and I would love to iterate on this tool in the future!
Material also made by myself in Substance Designer!

Preperation

In order to prepare for a variety of use cases, I allowed the tool to be extendable to work with multiple input sources as well as offering a lot of control over the visual style for art iteration. I always begin a project with a brief outline of my main thoughts and considerations, demonstrated visually in the video above this text!
